I'm a big FromSoft fan and had high hopes for Elden Ring. Fortunately, the game lived up to expectations, admirably evolving not only the Soul formula but also the open world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The open world of this game is near perfect in my opinion, as it's not FOMO-style content, but rather consists of truly worthwhile scenery, quests, and thrills that players can enjoy at whatever pace and how they want. Additionally, there are multiple handcrafted dungeons that vary wildly in scale, design, and necessity (i.e., mostly optional), which improve on the world of BOTW, but are all uniformly excellent because the level and enemy designs are truly fantastic. In typical FromSoft style, the combat is also fantastic, deep, and filled with plenty of satisfying mechanics to play with. The excellent combat is further complemented by a great variety of builds that allow you to try out many cool weapons, magic, spells, and ashes of war. My only complaint is that the boss fights are a bit of a mixed bag, with some that rival From's best, while many are middling and some are incredibly unpleasant, especially in the later game.
