Car-themed watches abound, entire watch brands are built around the connection between motorsports and timekeeping, and the most recognizable names in the world of horology can be seen as sponsors of racing cars and events around the world. While some watchmakers simply add stripes to the dial or rally band of a decades-old Coronagraph watch, Bugatti and Jacob & Co. take "car inspiration" to the next level.
The marketing materials for this watch talk about recreating the visceral feeling of a Bugatti W16 in a watch, but the problem is that conventional watch movements can't capture the energy and power of such a high-performance car. So instead of creating a movement that represents Bugatti's elegance and engineering, they decided to produce what is perhaps the most complicated car-branded watch ever made, a functional replica of a Bugatti 16-cylinder engine, complete with working pistons and a spinning turbocharger.
Push the crown on the right side of the watch and the engine startsâthe crankshaft turns and the pistons pump up and down, just like a real internal combustion engine. As the engine runs, two "turbochargers" on the side of the engine block (reduced from four in the actual Chiron engine) spin. The movement is made up of 578 parts, reaching the highest level of complexity for the development team.
In addition to the animation inside, the case is designed to capture the shape of the Chiron, including the iconic Bugatti grille and side scoops, and the movement is even suspended by tiny coil springs. The watch itself is quite gorgeous, but once you see it in action, the beauty of the engineering shines.
